Hormones (July 24, 2009, 09:52:28 AM) |
|
Hormones are powerful chemical messengers that circulate through your bloodstream to specific target cells where they generate a wide range of biological responses. Think of hormones as the "prime movers" of your physical and emotional well being. Every time you get angry, become tired, laugh, cry, have sex, wake up, feel hungry, or fall asleep your body is responding to hormones. That's because hormone levels can impact virtually every major system and organ in your body The main function of any hormone is to carry chemical messages from one tissue or organ to another tissue or organ in the body, There are several hundred different types of hormones. The group we hear about most often is the steroid hormones, which are all derived from cholesterol. The steroid family of hormones can be broken down into five major categories: 1)the estrogens (DHEA, testosterone, androstenedione) 2) progesterone 3)glucocorticoids (cortisol, cortisone)corticoids (aldosterone) There are five ways of taking hormones: oral (tablet) transdermal (skin patch or cream/gel) implant (pellet inserted under skin) injection (e.g. intramuscular testosterone) vaginally (cream or tablets)
